FEATURES –
The PT-P700 has three buttons: power, cutter, and Ptouch. The Ptouch button enables or disables the built in USB drive with the software. When powered on the USB drive is active and the cutter is not normally needed if you use the default setting of auto cut when printing. A single USB cable works for both accessing the built in drive and the printer connection.

In the program is a button that you can use to install a more capable printing program that extends the capabilities for complex job. Unfortunately it takes you to a web page that is a bit confusing and makes you find the right program version to install. I don't understand why the program can't figure out what OS and version I need and simply download it for me. Fortunately the included Lite version is great for quick prints on the go of simple text and graphics.
On a Mac (10.9.1) the included software did not work well at all. It was slow to start, and printing failed with communication errors. I was able to download the full software and use it to print though. It doesn't seem like Brother offers the capability to upgrade the built in software so the quick print capability available on a PC doesn't seem to be possible on a Mac.
The printer seems to waste quite a bit of material, about 1" before and after the text. I know brother is in the business of selling label tape but wasting it and forcing me to clean up my print jobs with a pair of scissors is not the best way to build a product.
All my print jobs were clear and accurate. There is another review with bad prints, I suspect something is wrong with their device as I did not have any issues.
The included label tape is not a full roll so be sure to buy more. If the tape roll is going to be small Brother should include a variety of styles to try. Otherwise they should ship the device with a good full roll so I am ready to use the device for large projects.
If you have a large project, multiple copies or using auto numbering, the printer will chug out the prints and cut them off automatically fast and efficiently. Printed labels can be vertical or horizontal, and the automatic setting make it easy to build a label with the correct font, tape size, and justification. Even mirrored print if you have a need for that. The pTouch software supports printing scannable bar codes, and you can use the graphics feature to insert QR codes as well.
While tapes are available in multiple colors, keep in mind the printer only prints one color. With the included tape it is Black lettering on White tape. The prints are permanent as the lettering is under the clear laminated exterior which means the lettering won't ever wear off or fade.

(2) A very nice labeler - I have at least a half-dozen Brother P-touch label machiens laying around here. I always intend to use them religiously so that everything, especially cables, is clearly labelled so I'm not quickly reduced to vulgarisms every time I need to find something quickly.
I've had one of their computer connected labelers before - and it didn't stay connected for long. To much bother.
The PT-P700 has a fighting chance of being used more than the others.
It's a nicely designed unit, if somewhat large: 3.1 x 6.0 x 5.6 inches.
Including specialty items, there are more than 70 tape styles available ranging from 3.5 through 24mm. (Yes, like inkjet printers, Brother makes its money on supplies.) A visit to the Brother-USA site is worth trip for a complete description of the seven different kinds of tape (i.e., laminated, cable wrap, security, etc.), though I still haven't found anything better than the printed brochure that comes with the unit describing all the sizes and color combinations. It comes with a 0.94" tape and I immediately ordered ¼" and 3/8" taps which are the ones I use the most.
The real gimmick here is that this printer has built-in editing software which makes it somewhat faster to print a one-off label if you are in a hurry. This is a very convenient feature.
Brother includes the full editing software as well and it is a big improvement over earlier versions. Included are 31 groups of label templates, most of them distinguished from the others by artwork. For example, they have a set of Valentine's Day templates with little hearts and floral designs. Cute, but not persuasive.
But some of the templates, like those intended for labels to be attached to cables are real winners and time-savers.
Printing is fast and the quality excellent, even for the black and white renditions of color photographs.
Whether you use the built-in software or the computer hosted software, actual operation is about as simple as it gets. There's an auto-cutter, which can also be operated manually. The label making software is well thought-out and shows significant improvements over earlier versions.
Do I like the PT-P700? Yes. Should you buy one if your old, more manually oriented labeler is working? Maybe if you only use such a unit occasionally - yes, if you make a lot of labels.
